A new membership-based, environmentally-friendly community car-sharing service, using fuel-efficient Honda Jazz cars, was officially launched by the Mayor of Manly, Dr Peter Macdonald, and Manly’s State Member of Parliament, David Barr, at 11.00am on Monday 12 February 2007, with the offer of free memberships for Manly residents until 15 April 2007. Under Manly’s new Flexicar scheme, a pair of economical and agile Honda Jazz cars, dubbed ‘Tweetie’ and ‘Woodstock’, will be based at ground level of Council’s Whistler Street Car Park, within easy reach of Manly Ferry Wharf and bus interchange. “The Flexicar community car-sharing service is the answer for local residents and businesses that want the freedom of a car, without the costs and hassles of owning one,” said Dr Macdonald. “As the name implies, Flexicar is more flexible and typically closer to homes and workplaces than car rental companies. It is cheaper and more versatile than taxis. And it complements public transport use, cycling and walking.” “Also, the Honda Jazz cars in the Flexicar fleet are easy on fuel consumption and the environment compared with most cars.” “Flexicar members each receive their own smartcard. With this, they make vehicle bookings online or over the phone on an hourly or daily basis.” “Then they just go up to the car parked in Manly’s Whistler Street Car Park, swipe their smartcard across the windscreen, the car doors open - and away they go!” “When finished using the car, you just return it to the same reserved parking space. Petrol, registration and insurance are all included in the low Flexicar rates.” “If you drive less than 10,000 km a year, Flexicar is much cheaper than running your own car.
