Carshare Hits the Big Screen
16th April 2007

Federation Square played host to ex Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett and Phil Ceberano supporting alternative transport options.

What's Suitable Transport?
Many months ago Stephen Gale, an ex Air Force Officer, a pilot and an electronics engineer, created a plan to ride from Melbourne to Sydney on his electric bike whilst wearing a business suit.

Suitable Transport Ride was then officially launched on Monday 16th April at Federation Square. A simple project proudly sponsored by Flexicar to demonstrate the benefits of electric bikes and alternative transport options for business.

Why?
Stephen thought if more people knew about electric bikes they might choose them over their cars, and thereby create virtually no environmental impact as a result of their transport activities. If he can do this easily in a suit, doesn't that show the potential of the electric bike? He doesn’t even sell bikes, or suits, or actually anything – he just saw Andrew Denton and Al Gore speak on TV one night, and felt a need to act.

Who are all those other people riding with him?
Those other people who are wearing their lab coats, overalls, and chef’s outfits believed in the message and wanted to join him! Stephen asked around and found no less than 20 remarkable people from all kinds of interesting companies; all willing don their corporate attire and ride with him! The youngest, Finnly, is only 8 months old, and the oldest is over 70! Even the fantastic rock guitarist Phil Ceberano is going to wear his rock god attire – Stephen even fitted a special guitar carrying attachment fitted to Phil's bike (apparently its called a sissy bar!). A couple of organisations, namely Golder Associates and the Australian Red Cross have entered teams so that lots of their employees can take part.

Where and When?
Suitable Transport planned a musical launch from Melbourne's Federation Square on Monday 16 April 2007 at mid-day.The riders then took a scenic coastal route to Sydney, arriving 3pm Tuesday 24 April 2007 at the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. Phil Ceberano, his band Trentwood, and a raft of special guests including Midnight Oil Frontman turned Labour MP Peter Garrett helped launch this grand event.

Dick Smith endorses Suitable Transport
Dick Smith, famous business man, aviator, adventurer and holder of the Order of Australia award says this about Suitable Transport:
"Stephen Gale has demonstrated that by challenging our conventional notions of transportation we can each dramatically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Whether we are talking about an electric bike or an ethanol fueled aircraft, we need to open our minds to all possibilities.” – Dick Smith.

Who is helping Suitable Transport?
A lot of really wonderful companies! USA bike giant Schwinn has give Stephen two brand new beautiful World GSE bikes to do the ride on. Go Electric, the Magnetic Island electric bike hire company has provided his friends with 15 of their fantastic Ezi-Torq bikes (all new) at a staggeringly generous price. Agri Energy has provided Ethanol and Bio Diesel cars to support the ride, while Flexicar has lent him the infamous Flying Car for the trip. Kennards have helped with the special support equipment he needed, and Climate Positive are providing certificates to ensure the entire project and related activities have a positive environmental impact.
