Stonnington Says "No" to Carsharing 13th November 2007We had grand plans to extend our locations into Stonnington. Unfortunately, Stonnington Council have other ideas. Last night at a closed council meeting (no members of the public allowed), the council rejected our proposal to operate our car share service from three on-street parks. The proposed parks are near South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor stations. The reason the council gave in rejecting our proposal was that by allocating street parking to our cars, it was providing parking to a private company. Yet the council already provides private companies with allocated parking – taxi ranks, couriers and loading bays for delivery vans, etc. Plus car sharing actually reduces parking pressure. Instead of every household owning one or more cars, between 10-20 residents can share a single Flexicar. And so we believe our cars provide the community with a net benefit that outweighs the council’s argument. Furthermore, we already operate with great support from six other local councils; Yarra, Port Phillip, Melbourne, Moreland, Sydney and Manly. Their support makes it possible for our cars to live on local streets. Without Stonnington Council’s support, it’s going to be very difficult for us to place cars in these areas. This is particularly disappointing, because so many of you have asked us to put Flexicars in these areas. So this is where all of you come in. We’re hoping if Stonnington Council hears from enough of passionate residents about the service we provide they will reconsider our proposal. We’d love it if you could send a quick email to the Stonnington Council Mayor Claude Ullin (cullin@stonnington.vic.gov.au), outlining why you believe Flexicar is a valuable community asset and why they should reconsider our proposal. |
