Supporting Local Musicians

Most of us love listening to music when we are driving. And it’s always great hearing a new CD. Particularly when you don’t even have to pay for it.

One of the best things about being a Flexicar member is our CD of the month program. It’s our way of making your drive more entertaining, while also supporting local bands and artists. Every couple of months we purchase a bulk quantity of a new CD (one for each car), and then you get to listen to it for that next two months. At the end of the two months, if you like it, you get to take it home.

It’s a great way to hear different styles and voices, and get to know what's being produced on the local independent music scene. See below the diverse range of CDs that have been played in our cars.

Andrew wrote all the songs (apart from ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, an INXS cover) and played all the instruments, including a Riedel wine glass on epic centrepiece ‘Sand Dunes’.
McUtchen’s songwriting coupled with producer Warwick Thomas’ warm acoustic sensibiliy draws a line between this time of Cat Stevens’ acoustic simplicity (‘Morning Paper’), to Bon Iver (‘Ghosts of Prague’) in the now.

MAY-JUN 2009- The Wildes
The Wildes' new album "Ballad of a Young Married Man" was released in May through Sydney label Select Global.
Although there are some country style songs on the album - but it is country with a very Melbourne twist - The Wildes are not really a country band.
The band has gained praise from ABC radio, Triple J and from the Street Press. ABC's John Nutting, the Godfather of Australian Country music, wrote that The Wildes are "the freshest and most exciting band to emerge
on the Australian scene in years".
And of course, The Wildes' album makes a great driving music!

FEB-MAR-APR 2009- Richmond Lamarr

DECEMBER 2007- Resistance is Futile, Magneto
Our December CD is by local band, Magneto.
Motivated by the love of simplistic and immediate rawk'n'roll and a healthy disrespect of reality TV mock stars, the four skipped work, crammed into a Richmond rehearsal studio and wrote furiously.
By the time the hallowed lights of the MCG filtered through the cracked plaster soundproofing, they had the swag of tunes that comprise Magneto’s debut album Resistance Is Futile.
Magneto is vocalist John Baxter, Paul Inglis on bass, guitarist extraordinaire Michael Snowball and the powerhouse skin thumper Geoff Barnes.

NOVEMBER 2007 - Then Comes Monday, Brilliant Fanzine
Our November CD of the month is from Melbourne indie band Brilliant Fanzine. The band burst onto the scene in 2005, with their track One in 10,000 being discovered by Triples J's Robbie Buck. JULY/AUGUST 2007 - The Cure For The Cure, Splurge
Melbourne band Splurge CD The Cure For The Cure is full of emotionally direct songs which have been likened to those by Grant McLennan (Go Betweens) and Steve Kilbey (The Church). This latest album is the third for the band and blends melody and mood similar to early Oasis, Radiohead’s The Bends and even some Tears for Fears.

MAY/JUNE 2007 - This is Grand Atlantic, Grand Atlantic
The four piece Brisbased band Grant Atlantic's second album This is Grand Atlantic is following the success of their debit EP Smoke & Mirrors. The latest release is heralded as one of 2007's best pop/rock Australian releases conjuring up the wide-ranging sonic textures and songwriting smarts of the Beatles and the Beach Boys but wrapping it all in a beautifully-produced modern sound. This is one that any fan of intelligent, melodic pop rock will need to investigate.

APRIL 2007 - Far From the Madding Crowd, The Steinbecks
The Steinbecks are a Melbourne band, based around the songwriting partnership of brothers Josh and Joel Meadows. MARCH 2007 - One Night Alone, Winterpak
Our March CD is the beautiful debut album One Night Alone from one of Melbourne’s most exciting new bands, Winterpark. The album is eleven tracks featuring a mix of retro-tinged indie-tronics and sonic ambience. This is the sound of contrasting extremes, set in a musical interzone somewhere between synth pop and Sigur Ros.

FEBRUARY 2007 - Like Drawing Blood, Gotye
This month is Melbourne artist Gotye’s (pronounced "gore-ti-yeah") CD Like Drawing Blood. Combining alt-pop with a broad sonic and thematic palette, the CD has moments of spacey dub, electro-funk pop, sumptuous orchestral sounds countered by the unbridled positivity of Northern Soul, turntablist kook and a wonderful mixture of Bollywood-pop-meets-psychedelic-dancehall groove. Like Drawing Blood picked up nominations for an Aria, the J Award and won the AIR Award's Most Outstanding New Artist.

DECEMBER 2006 - Drowning is Dreaming, Saoi
